Talk: Shakespeare and the Moon

Wednesday 12 June | 7pm | £12.50 | Friends £11.25

Watts Gallery | Age 16+

For Shakespeare, the moon might be quick, slow, unlucky, chaste, watery, funny, or angry, but above all it (or she) was variable. Drawing inspiration from the Moonscapes exhibition, writer Dr Daniel Swift will explore some of the Moon’s appearances in Shakespeare’s plays, focusing particularly on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which the moon is worshipped as a goddess and yet also brought on-stage as a badly-dressed character. Discover how Shakespeare saw the Moon as light and dark, mortal and godlike, but always powerful and a source of fun and trouble.
